
Overview
The Professional Certificate Programme on Electoral Campaign Management is designed to provide students a comprehensive introduction to political campaigning and election management while enabling them to gain insights into and engage with the functioning of electoral democracy. Responding to the growing demand for political analysts and strategists across the country, this inter-disciplinary course focuses on the development of electoral campaign management professionals who can design, strategize and implement election campaigns. Through a rigorous and immersive pedagogy, the course aims to equip students with practical skills through field exposures, interactions, workshops, projects and constituency management internships along with lectures on a cross-section of subjects.In addition to academic and practical training, the programme also offers networking opportunities, access to professional forums and placement support.
Students successfully completing the course will be eligible for highly lucrative job opportunities with political leaders and parties, consultancy firms, project management firms, policy think tanks, mediaorganisations, NGOs, CSOs and other international organisations.

Course timeline: 6 months (full time)
Programme structure:
Approved by the UGC under the new NEP structure, this six-month programme will be divided into eight concise modules and will be delivered through a series of physical lectures, workshops and projects.
Each module will be taught over a period of 4 weeks and includes continuous assessment through assignments, presentations, workshops and seminars.
Note: Credits gained upon successful completion of the programme is transferable and can be used in this or upcoming academic year.

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates should hold a graduate degree or equivalent from a recognised university in India or abroad. Students graduating this year can apply with a provisional degree certificate.

This course is open for both experienced professionals looking to acquire new skills in campaign management as well as for fresh graduates interested in the field of electoral politics.

Some work experience in the field of public policy, economics, media management, electoral management or any other related field is an added advantage.

A candidate is only allowed to apply once in the admission cycle. Duplicate applications or re-application after rejection of initial application is not permitted.

Selection criteria

Selection of candidates will happen on a rolling basis so the earlier you apply, the earlier you will hear back.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of their CV and statement of purpose.

Candidates with some work experience in relevant fields will be given preference.

If selected, prospective students will receive an acceptance email in their registered email IDs with further instructions on fee payment procedure and other formalities.

(A 10% concession in fee will be accorded to candidates if:
• The candidate is affiliated to a political party including the youth wing of a political party
• The candidate has an experience of two or more years in the field of student politics,
political consultancy, election management or has been associated with any elected
representatives in professional capacity.

Who should apply for the course? Any graduate with an interest in politics and a desire to learn more about elections and electioneering in India should apply. We especially encourage early and mid-career professionals engaged in the fields of law, public policy, social work, media and communications, data sciences etc. to apply.

Is the programme full time or part-time? The programme is full time and includes a 1-month constituency management project.

What is the mode of instruction? The programme will be conducted via physical classes in Gauhati University for the first four months. In the fifth month, students will be required to operate out of the respective constituencies that they are assigned.

What does the constituency management project entail? Each student is required to undergo a 4-week internship where they will be assigned a constituency and attached to an MLA/MP. Students will be divided into small groups and will have to complete a project of their choosing while working as a part of the MP/MLA’s team. Students will be mentored by the faculty and will have to provide weekly updates.

Is accommodation during constituency management internship provided by the University? Yes, the university will arrange for accommodation for the students during the constituency management project, wherever necessary.

What are immersive learning projects? Immersive learning projects are high impact, collaborative learning exercises that allows students to work on live projects and encourages them to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations.

Will the programme assist with placements after the course? The University will attempt to assist students with placements in political consultancies and political parties/party leaders’ offices. As a part of the Leadership and Career Development Lab, we will also organise regular networking sessions with industry experts, founders of consulting firms, senior journalists and leaders of political parties and provide mentoring and career counselling to all students. This includes training in CV writing, interview etiquettes, personal brand building on LinkedIn and confidence building measures
